Senior AI Engineer or Big Tech? The Job-Offer Trade-Off

Austin compares two real career paths: a senior AI engineering role at a fast-growing startup and a mid-level software engineering role at a large public technology company. The comparison weighs scope, title, AI infrastructure work, company growth, equity liquidity, on-call expectations, brand value, and promotion runway.

There is no universal answer. The video lays out the specific trade-offs that make a job offer more than a compensation number, then asks what you would optimize for at this point in your career.

0:00Would you choose the mid level software engineer or would you choose the senior level software engineer And before you answer let me explain For context I have two potential job opportunities Number one is a mid level software engineering position at a tier one tech company Number two is a senior level software engineer at a no name but well capitalized doing well startup Here are the different pros and cons that I'm personally considering So number one the tier one startup is definitely going to be a lot more work Companies like Robinhood Coinbase and Figma they tend to make you actually you know work a decent number of hours It'll probably not be 80 to 90 hours but realistically it might be 50 to 60 It's a traditional big tech companies with things like on call stand up retros the works everything you can imagine It's like a regular tech company For the startup it seems to be a lot more low key and laid back I mean you'll definitely work a full work week of 40 hours but from what you talk to and the people you've asked they have a really strong really good work life balance The company is doing well They have lots of really big really great customers They're growing like crazy but they're still a series C startup so your equity is frozen You can't really sell your equity Other than that both jobs are basically offering you the same thing They're basically both offering you around 320 000 total compensation and around the same salary Which would you choose Leave a comment below and tell me why
