The Dark Side of Coding With AI

Austin has built NexusTrade from scratch over six years and, with AI tools like Claude Code and Codex, has written nearly 3 million lines of source code. He walks through what that scope costs a solo builder: parts of the system he can only maintain with AI, his monthly compute bills, and alerts that wake him up after something breaks at midnight. His advice is to build the minimum version that satisfies your wants and needs.

0:00Here's the dark side

0:01of coding with AI

0:02that nobody really talks

0:04about So for context

0:06I'm a software engineer

0:07and for the past

0:08six years I've developed

0:10an entire system from

0:12scratch And thanks to

0:14the help of AI

0:15tools like Claude Code

0:17and Codex I've written

0:18nearly 3 million lines

0:21of source code This

0:23does not include random

0:25text files This does

0:26not include documentation This

0:28is 3 million lines

0:30of actual source code

0:33And because of these

0:34AI tools the system

0:35I built actually works

0:37end to end and

0:39is extremely extensive It

0:41includes an iOS app

0:43that will be launching

0:44on the App Store

0:45soon It includes a

0:46production ready AI agent

0:47that I started building

0:49before tools like Codex

0:51even existed I started

0:54building my AI agent

0:55before Claude Code existed

0:58And now everyone is

0:59using Claude Code and

1:00Cursor and Codex I

1:01started building my AI

1:02agent from day one

1:04when GPT-3 was just

1:05released

1:05And now I have

1:06a actual working AI

1:09agent that can create

1:11profitable trading strategies Right

1:13now I'm actually fine

1:15tuning my own agent

1:16on Qwen And I'm

1:18going to use it

1:19to launch an army

1:20of trading bots that

1:22actually work I could

1:24not have done this

1:25without AI but there's

1:27a dark side to

1:28coding with AI that

1:29I don't know what

1:29I'm talking about and

1:30it's really heavy on

1:31my chest right now

1:32The dark side is

1:33this AI makes creating

1:35software so easy that

1:36you want to create

1:37all the software you

1:38can You know the

1:39scope increased for my

1:40app for building trading

1:42strategies that work on

1:43open high and low

1:44close data to building

1:46profitable options trading bots

1:48that works on minute

1:49by minute historical data

1:52So I can perform

1:53a back test to

1:53see how did this

1:54options trading strategy perform

1:56during COVID How did

1:57this options trading strategy

1:58perform in the past

2:00six months Is it

2:01robust over time Questions

2:03like this

2:03And because I did

2:04all this work and

2:05built all these systems

2:06it is a nightmare

2:07to maintain some of

2:08the code I

2:10can't maintain without AI

2:11Some of the code

2:12I don't actually know

2:13what it does Not

2:14the critical path right

2:15Not like how the

2:16AI agents work or

2:17how the back testing

2:18work or how the

2:19live trading work but

2:20things like the data

2:21hydration How do I

2:22actually get the source

2:23data transform it to

2:24a format my platform

2:25understands and uploads that

2:27to my blob stores

2:28How does all that

2:29actually work end to

2:31end I don't really

2:32know I know the

2:33high level architecture but

2:34I don't know the

2:35code So when it

2:35breaks I have to

2:37rely on AI So

2:38I can't just open

2:39the code and figure

2:40out what's breaking I

2:41have to use AI

2:42tools

2:42And at my peak

2:44I've spent over $800

2:46per month on just

2:48the coding tools I've

2:50spent $6,000 last month

2:54on compute Like I

2:56don't have like venture

2:58backing I had to

2:59use it out of

2:59my savings account

3:00And just to keep

3:02the lights on I'm

3:03going to be spending

3:04a minimum of $3,000

3:06per month every month

3:08until I decide to

3:10shut the app down

3:10or it's just forever

3:12you know $3,000 per

3:14month minimum

3:15And it's expensive I

3:17get alerts every single

3:18day that have to

3:20be fixed I have

3:21to spend all this

3:22money and I'm just

3:23burnt out building it

3:25like I don't want

3:26to shut it down

3:27Because I use it

3:28every single day but

3:29I'm burnt out having

3:30to maintain all of

3:32this code It's so

3:34much Code it's just

3:36so much to maintain

3:38This went from a

3:39project that cost me

3:40maybe $1,000 to $2,000

3:43per month on this

3:44worst days to costing

3:45me $3,000, $4,000, $5,000

3:48per month for the

3:49rest of my life

3:50It's a lot It's

3:51a ton to maintain

3:53It's exhausting You don't

3:54know how exhausted I

3:55am waking up to

3:5620 alerts because something

3:58broke at midnight

3:59So if you're building

4:00a project especially by

4:01yourself especially if it's

4:03just a little side

4:04hustle don't be consumed

4:06with how much AI

4:07lets you build Build

4:08the minimum version you

4:10can that satisfies your

4:12wants and needs You

4:13don't want to spend

4:15$3, $4, $5, $6,000

4:16per month on compute

4:17I promise you you

4:18don't You don't want

4:18to wake up to

4:1930 alerts and you

4:20figure that you've realized

4:21that there was a

4:22lot of contention in

4:23your backtesting system So

4:24these backtests took on

4:25average 71 minutes when

4:27they should have took

4:28100 seconds and that

4:29cost you $300 You

4:31don't want to wake

4:32up to those types

4:33of alerts

4:34It's it's exhausting
